Prioritize Your Goals

I hope you’re excited about 2020. It is reasonable to feel a little overwhelmed as you wrap up 2019 and try to figure out where business will head this year. There are always changes on the horizon and any time there is uncertainty in our future it can cause us to feel insecure.

Remember, there are some things that are in your power to control, and some things that are not. Worrying about things you can’t control or letting them negatively affect your opportunities won’t have a positive outcome. You can’t control the economy, government regulations, or new technology, but what you can learn to adapt quickly.

As you look at the year in front of you and you complete your 2020 business plan, you will be faced with having to prioritize numerous goals. To keep up with the constant change in our industry, you must constantly be updating your systems and tools and value proposition, but you can’t tackle everything at once. My suggestion is to make a list of all the projects you want to tackle this year. Do you need to update your social media strategy? Do you need to revamp your listing presentation? Do you need to update your CRM system? Do you need to implement better stay-in-touch marketing campaigns to your past clients? Do you need a new website? Once you make a list of every project, rank them in order of importance based on which projects will have the biggest impact on your customer service. Once you’ve prioritized your list, tackle one project at a time and don’t start the next project until the first is completed.

I also recommend you gut-check every project before you start. How will it make your business better? How will it improve your customer service? How will it generate more opportunities? Is it worth the time and effort? Sometimes we take on a new project because someone else tells us we should do it, but we never take the time to make sure it makes sense for our business. Your number one job every day is to find someone who wants to buy or sell a house with you. Every project you work on should help you put more sold signs on people’s lawns. If it won’t, then it shouldn’t be a priority.

My last piece of advice…many of the projects you tackle this year will involve adopting new technologies. But remember, you are not in the technology business. Technology is simply a tool to help you generate more business. If a new technology won’t do that, take it off the list.
